Being a professional hunting guide is the kind of job some people give up their other job for, because they finally discover it’s the job they seem put on this planet to do. There’s a great sense of adventure to the job– the kind of job that combines leadership, being in nature, the thrill of the hunt, and working with people to achieve a goal.
The wilderness is a lot more interesting than a work cubicle in an office park in Anywhere, USA or Somewhere, Canada. When you’re surrounded by tall trees, bushes, streams, rivers, lakes, hills, and/or mountains, you feel so alive. This is a chance to feel what it must have been like to live out on the land for centuries before mankind took to living in suburban tract homes complete with modern conveniences.
Hunting guides get the opportunity to explore the wilderness while others are stuck at their 9-to-5 jobs, cooped up in stuffy buildings. Rather than becoming fat on sugary soda and candy bars like most khaki-wearing desk jockeys do, hunting guides face true physical challenges in their jobs, often carrying thirty-pound packs on their backs as they hike up and down hills and paths for hours at a time. Hunters do get sweaty– it’s a great workout, and can be quite demanding physically, if that’s what the guide and/or hunter wants.
While there are some hunting guide schools, oftentimes guides are personally taught by those who’ve come before them– the wise hunting guide who knows the land well, and has the knowledge and expertise of years of experience he or she is willing to impart to the younger guide. As much as book learning is valued, there’s something special about how an older person with experience leads a novice guide around the woods and explains all the ins-and-outs of the job so the novice eventually can do it on their own.
