When you’re first starting out you can get by with the basics that include a fly rod, flies, leaders and waders. This will be more than enough when your goal is to just go out and give things a shot.
Have the appropriate licenses
One thing that many novice fly fishermen forget to do is getting the appropriate licenses. Depending on where you are fishing, there will be different licenses required.
If you’re staying at a professional fishing lodge or camp, they will typically be able to provide you with the licenses you require.
Practice your casting
A proper cast is essential for becoming a successful fly fisherman. Before you head out on your first trip we suggest studying up on casting. There are many informational posts online as well as videos that will help you get a better understanding of the art.
Once you feel you have a good understanding of how to cast, head out to your backyard or a local body of water to try things out for yourself.

While this one may seem unnecessary to some, having a good feel for your waders and wading in water is extremely important for a successful fly-fishing trip.
Since you’ll be out in the water for most of your trip, it is suggested to practice using your waders in a nearby body of water to get a good feel for them and to see if you’ve chosen the right size. Having the correct pair of waders will make a world of difference.
Learn how to read the water
Another piece of information that is extremely important when heading out on your first fly fishing trip is learning how to read the water.
Fish live in different areas in rivers and lakes, and if you don’t recognize these specific spots, you’ll have little luck on the water.
